Dr. Maral Ouzounian Appointed Division Head of Cardiovascular Surgery at University Health Network

(TORONTO, January 1, 2022)- Dr. Maral Ouzounian has been appointed as the Head of the Division of Cardiovascular Surgery in the Sprott Department of Surgery and the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre at University Health Network (UHN).
Dr. Ouzounian, an accomplished pianists in her own right, is a well-known cardiovascular surgeon in Canada and worldwide.
Currently, she is a Cardiovascular Surgeon and Surgeon Scientist in Sprott Surgery and the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre at UHN and Associate Professor of Surgery in the Department of Surgery at the University of Toronto. She is also the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre Chair in Advanced Cardiac Therapeutics at University Health Network.
She received her MD from McGill University and her Royal College Fellowship in Cardiac Surgery (FRCSC) from Dalhousie University. She completed a PhD in vascular biology at the University of Toronto, and then completed an advanced fellowship in complex aortic surgery with Dr. Joseph Coselli at Baylor College, Texas Heart Institute in Houston. Since her recruitment to Toronto in 2013, she has developed her practice in Cardiovascular Surgery and grown the Thoracic Aortic Program in a multidisciplinary and collaborative manner. She is the Surgical Director of the Transcatheter Valve Program as well as the Fellowship Director for the Division of Cardiac Surgery at UHN.
Her clinical and academic interests are in the understanding and management of valvular and aortic diseases. She has published over 180 papers in the field and is an author on multiple guidelines and position statements. She is a founding member of the Canadian Thoracic Aortic Collaborative and is the Secretary-Treasurer of the Canadian Society of Cardiac Surgeons. She is the Chair of the Professional Advisory Board of the Genetic Aortic Disorders of Canada and founder of the multidisciplinary Heritable Aortic Disorders Symposium.
Dr. Ouzounian is a member of multiple international aortic consortia including the Society of Thoracic Surgery Aortic Task Force, the International Registry for Aortic Dissections, and the Montalcino Aortic Consortium.
She is also the Chair of the Adult Cardiac Program for this year’s Scientific Meeting of the American Association for Thoracic Surgeons and serves on the program committee for the world’s largest aortic meeting, the AATS Aortic Symposium.

(TORONTO, 1er janvier 2022) – La Dre Maral Ouzounian a été nommée chef de la division de chirurgie cardiovasculaire du Service de chirurgie Sprott et du Centre cardiaque Peter Munk du Réseau universitaire de santé (UHN).
La Dre Ouzounian, pianiste accomplie à part entière, est une chirurgienne cardiovasculaire bien connue au Canada et dans le monde.
Elle est actuellement chirurgienne cardiovasculaire et chirurgienne scientifique en chirurgie Sprott et au Peter Munk Cardiac Centre de l'UHN et professeure agrégée de chirurgie au département de chirurgie de l'Université de Toronto. Elle est également titulaire de la chaire Peter Munk Cardiac Centre en thérapeutique cardiaque avancée au University Health Network.
Elle a obtenu son doctorat en médecine de l'Université McGill et sa bourse du Collège royal en chirurgie cardiaque (FRCSC) de l'Université Dalhousie. Elle a obtenu un doctorat en biologie vasculaire à l'Université de Toronto, puis une bourse de recherche avancée en chirurgie aortique complexe avec le Dr Joseph Coselli au Baylor College, Texas Heart Institute à Houston. Depuis son recrutement à Toronto en 2013, elle a développé sa pratique en chirurgie cardiovasculaire et développé le programme de l'aorte thoracique de manière multidisciplinaire et collaborative. Elle est directrice chirurgicale du programme de valve transcathéter ainsi que directrice de la bourse pour la division de chirurgie cardiaque de l'UHN.
Ses intérêts cliniques et universitaires portent sur la compréhension et la gestion des maladies valvulaires et aortiques. Elle a publié plus de 180 articles dans le domaine et est l'auteur de plusieurs lignes directrices et déclarations de position. Elle est membre fondatrice du Canadian Thoracic Aortic Collaborative et secrétaire-trésorière de la Société canadienne des chirurgiens cardiaques. Elle est présidente du Conseil consultatif professionnel de Troubles génétiques de l'aorte du Canada et fondatrice du Symposium multidisciplinaire sur les troubles aortiques héréditaires.
Le Dr Ouzounian est membre de plusieurs consortiums aortiques internationaux, notamment le groupe de travail aortique de la Society of Thoracic Surgery, le Registre international des dissections aortiques et le Montalcino Aortic Consortium.
Elle est également présidente du programme de cardiologie pour adultes pour la réunion scientifique de cette année de l'Association américaine des chirurgiens thoraciques et siège au comité de programme de la plus grande réunion aortique au monde, l'AATS Aortic Symposium.
