Dear Friends:
I am happy to announce that tonight, we will be launching the Glendale Unified College Success Fund! Thanks to a $200,000 grant from Every Kid Counts College Savings Program and private donations, we have created a college and career savings account for each of our 2,000 first grade students with a $50 initial deposit into each account.
The research is clear about the benefits of even a modest amount of savings. Childhood development, academic performance, college-bound expectations, as well as confidence and hope for the future, all improve when children know they have a savings account.
Many thanks to my Board of Education colleagues for their support of the initiative and the GUSD staff for sincerely carrying out our vision. Much gratitude also goes to Assemblymember Adrin Nazarian, Glendale Educational Foundation, ScholarShare 529, Glendale Area Schools Credit Union, Opportunity to Assets, and Dr. Ed Kashadourian.
