This includes titles published almost everywhere Armenians have lived in any significant numbers, including major centers of Armenian life (and publishing) such as Yerevan, Etchmiadzin, Tiflis, St. Petersburg, Jerusalem, Constantinople, Smyrna, New Julfa, Beirut, Cairo, Sofia, Venice, Paris, Marseilles, New York, Boston, Fresno, Los Angeles, Buenos Aires and many others.

In a way, these books contain the story of the Armenian diaspora; in a way, they are the diaspora.

As was mentioned in last week's feature, many hundreds, if not thousands, of books in the NAASR Library carry the stamp of either the bookseller(s) or of a library in which the book formerly resided, or both.
There were an untold number of Armenian book shops, book sellers and small libraries (գրատուն, գրավաճառ, գրադարան; gratun, gravachar, grataran) in many cities and towns where Armenians settled. Exactly how many is not known; as far as we know there has never been any attempt to list them, much less study them, and little is known today about most of them. Nevertheless, they speak volumes (as it were) about the journey the books have made to get where they are now.
Below, a sampling of some of these stamps, mostly from the late 19th century until circa 1930. For the most part, we will let the pictures tell the story.

Tparan-Gratun M. Mamurean/Imprimerie-Librairie M. Mamourian (Տպարան–Գրատուն Մ. Մամուրեան) / Izmir/Smyrne. This title page of the first edition (1883) of Srbuhi Dusap's (Srpouhi Dussap, 1840–1901) feminist novel Mayta (Մայտա) also bears the stamp of the Armenian Library of Salem (MA). Matteos Mamourian (1830–1901) was a prolific writer, translator, and publisher. (Also faintly visible is the stamp of the Zardarean Gradun–see next entry.)
