As we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. today, it seems only fitting that we reflect on his tenants and teachings of tolerance and non-violence. I am proud to say that at the last board meeting, the Board of Education introduced a resolution "Recognizing the Rich Culture, Contributions, and Value of Our Black Students and Community Members." The resolution is the Board's commitment to stand for equity understanding and justice for our African American students, while recognizing the powerful impact and rich contributions made by African Americans in this country. We resolve to intentionally work to eliminate racism in our classroom culture, curricula, and our relationships.
I am proud and honored to stand with Black in Glendale and champion resolutions like "Recognizing the Rich Culture, Contributions, and Value of Our Black Students and Community Members." I look forward to the activities of the Black Lives Matter at School Week of Action. As I said during the last meeting, the resolution is robust and sincere; it is not a place to stop, but to begin together. I will use my role as a Board Member in the GUSD to remedy, heal, and correct. No more do Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's words ring truer then now, "The function of Education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character- that is the goal of true education." – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
