From Til to Qamishli: The Boghos Family's Journey | ODA
Our family collections always stand out with their unique backstories. Our new article is about the Sarkis and Boghos families who hailed from the village of Til, in the province of Siirt/Sghert, and later settled in the Qamishli region of northeastern Syria. Today, members of this large family are found in various parts of the world.
In the Siirt region, they lived in a predominantly Kurdish area, and later in Qamishli, continued to live in an area that was predominantly Kurdish but also Syriac/Assyrian.
As mentioned in the article, many Armenians here – including members of the Boghos and Sarkis families – distinguished themselves from the “traditional” Armenian type by their clothing, language, nicknames and songs. This outward difference has not been a problem of belonging for these Armenians. It's just that the outside viewer judged and examined them differently.
We are happy to showcase a family that has lived these experiences. We present their story based on written testimonies and photographs. We are especially glad that the author of the article, Sevan Boghos-Der Bedrossian, a member of this same family, has given new voice to his ancestors (Yadeh Shirineh/Hripsimeh, Hana, Soleyman Mksi, etc.) and the places they lived, from Til to Qamishli and Derik. They were unvoiced for too long…
Thank you Sevan for this partnership.
